What’s in the bag?

Are you ready to dive into the world of concert photography?
Whether I'm capturing intimate pub shows at the Lansdowne or shooting a stadium like Qudos Bank Arena, having the right gear in my camera bag is crucial.
In this guide, I'll share my personal recommendations for what should be in your camera bag when shooting a concert. So, let's jump in…

  1. The Camera:
My go-to camera is the Leica SL2. Its exceptional 47.2 megapixel image quality and reliable performance make it a true companion in the chaotic concert environment. Alongside my trusty SL2, I also carry the battle-ready Leica M10 and occasionally rely on a Kodak disposable camera for unexpected creative possibilities.

  2. Versatile Lenses for Different Perspectives:
To capture the energy of concerts from various angles, I recommend carrying a versatile lens setup. On my Leica SL2, I keep a 24-70mm Sigma f2.8 art series lens, which allows me to capture both close-ups of performers and wide-angle shots to showcase the venue's atmosphere. Adding a wider lens, such as the 21mm Voigtlander, to my Leica M10 brings an extra dimension to my concert shots. These lenses ensure I'm prepared to seize every moment, no matter the scale.

  3. Essential Accessories for Low-Light Conditions:
Concerts often bathe us in low-light settings, but flash photography is almost always banned in the pit.
However, having a speedlight in my bag proves handy when capturing energetic crowd shots or experimenting with creative lighting. Additionally, I always keep a lens cloth within reach because there’s always beer sprayed wither from the audience or the talent.. somehow! damn it!

  4. A Survival Kit:
To conquer the challenges of concert photography, I've curated a survival kit that ensures I'm prepared for any situation:

  • Extra batteries and SD cards: Never miss a beat due to a drained battery or limited storage space.

  • Peak Design slide strap for easy switching.

  • Permanent marker: Useful for labeling gear or signing autographs or graffing the greenroom.

  • 10,000mAh charger and iPhone cable.

  • Chewing gum and Panadol to stay refreshed on a long night.

  • Custom earplugs. Safeguard your hearing while immersing yourself in the music and always carry spares for your fellow photographers just in case.

  • Roll of electrical tape: A versatile tool that comes in handy for securing accreditation passes or solving unexpected gear mishaps.

  • Business cards with your Instagram handle: Connect with potential collaborators and share your work with fans. There’s always someone who asks “who do you shoot for?!”

Armed with the right gear in your camera bag, you're set for an easy night.
Remember, capturing the essence of live performances requires embracing the energy and being in the right place at the right time :)
